Our Values

Cape it simple, like birds do.

Let’s make things worth flying for.

Get our rest, and give our best.

Flock together, whatever the weather.

We can’t see what we don’t look for.

We gotta go there if we wanna know there.

The bright side is the right side.

Look after the places we love.

What if we lived
more like birds?

That’s what we wondered when we started Sunbird in 2010, and every day since.

It takes time to make things worth flying for. Like nature. What takes us aback is just how much birds get that. That admiration started us on a journey back in 2010 to create Sunbird.

We like to think that most of us want to be part of the solutions — not the problems — of our time. For birds, this comes naturally. For us, it’s a bit more complicated.

(let’s not try to be perfect)
Look, nobody’s perfect. We’re all living our lives, taking and giving as we go along — birds included.

(birds take breaks, we don’t)
The thing that doesn’t make sense is — unlike birds — when we finish something, we reward ourselves by doing more. We don’t use that time to enjoy a slice of life like they do. Instead, we keep cranking until we’re zonked on an infinite loop.

(we always feel overwhelmed)
When does life not feel over-complicated, over-stimulated, over-committed, or over-obligated? According to how most of us live, never! Even vacationers pile on more than should in the time they set aside to, you know, escape to Cape Cod to relax and recharge.

(too many choices)
The same goes for how many choices we face each day. It’s hard to offer fewer, better choices, just like it’s hard to choose from a pile of mediocre ones.

(doing more can lead to less)
The point is, our good intentions of doing more can have the opposite effect on our lives. We overwhelm ourselves with more than we should, instead of doing fewer things in better ways. Fear of missing out and fear of not keeping up are a couple reasons. So are the amount of things and choices coming at us at every turn each day.

(we understand because we do it too)
Full disclosure, we are textbook busybodies. We cross one thing off our lists so two things can replace it — rinse and repeat. This might sound familiar to many of you! In the past, we had no idea what was happening to us. We thought this was just how life works. Everyone is going like a bat outta hell, so why shouldn’t we as well?

()
Back in 2010, Sunbird started out as a food truck. Our goal was to bring fresh, simple, ingredient-driven food to a place we know and love. We worked tirelessly, and although our products were intentionally simple, our lifestyle was anything but. Lists were coming out our eyeballs trying to keep up.

()
Around that same time, we remember watching the shorebirds do their thing from our “moment of zen” spot near our house in the woods behind the dune cliffs. Eventually, we realized it was birds who keep things simple. They work and play hard, but leave plenty of space between to enjoy the world around them — unlike us.

()
Nevermind being workoholics and over-schedulers and multi-managers. Even when “relaxing” on the beach, it’s hard for us to actually RELAX and just be in the moment.

()
How can we see what’s in front of us when our head is always down? And so we started a new journey, which eventually became our tagline, Cape it simple.

()
Turns out, more doesn’t automatically translate to happier. Just like with birds, there’s a natural balance we’re meant to live within. Simply put: we were never meant to juggle and manage and process this much stuff!

()
At Sunbird, we’ve always been about simplicity and seasonality. We love elevating simple things rather than offering more things. We love consistency and dependability. And we love having fun and following the breeze to wherever it leads. None of this is possible unless we live by our credo: Cape it simple.

()
We’re here to inspire you to Cape it simple, too. Because when we flock together to do less stuff better, we have more time to enjoy life, and we become more in sync with the places we love so they stick around.

, rather than doing less stuff better so we can actually enjoy more of it, like birds do.

Today, unlike back then, we know why Sunbird is here. It’s to…

Over time we realized how unsustainable and bad for everything this can be. Bad for us, and the places we love. Day after day, we replaced fun and adventure and relaxing with more. More tasks, more to-do’s, more everything.

From our point of view it was to survive. But really, it was the pressure we put on ourselves. Doing “more” and having “more” choices was a way to trick ourselves into thinking things were going well. We new how to do more, but we had no idea how to do less, better.

In 2010 we launched Sunbird food truck, doing what we knew how to do (making food and designs).

Cape Cod is a great place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and each other. But even out here, life on the fly is harder than ever to navigate with so much coming at us. Sunbird inspires people to make each day worth flying for by doing less stuff better, like birds do!
